Agroperlite for fertilization - What is it and how is it used?

  • Agroperlite is white in color, looks strikingly similar to Styrofoam, and is sometimes used as a substitute for it in home insulation.
  • In gardening, agroperlite is used as a mixture for some fertilizers.
  • The little white balls you see in most starter mix packages are actually agroperlite.
  • It is used for its two main qualities – to retain moisture and nutrients.
  • Its beneficial properties come precisely from the way it is extracted - when heated, it increases in size up to 16 times, similar to popcorn, and pores appear on its surface, which retain moisture.
  • Once expanded, agroperlite becomes extremely light, which is why there is a risk of it being washed away by water or blown away by the wind.
  • First of all, agroperlite has the property of removing excess groundwater and retaining a very small amount of moisture, sufficient for the plant's needs.
  • This way it won't get sick from excessive watering.
  • Secondly, agroperlite provides oxygen to the plant and the beneficial microorganisms that live in the soil.
  • Since it comes from volcanic rock, it is heavier than soil, preventing it from becoming a lump that is impermeable to water or air.
  • Make your own fertilizer mix - you need equal parts agroperlite, peat moss (sphagnum), and organic fertilizer (compost).
  • The mixture is suitable for seedlings and potted plants.
  • You can only use agroperlite and peat one to one.
  • When planting, fill the pot or container you have chosen with three-quarters of the mixture.
  • Place the seeds, cover them with starter fertilizer and press lightly on top.
