Atmosphere

The author of the worldwide bestsellers "The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo" and "Daisy Jones & The Six" presents a new epic novel set during NASA's space shuttle programme in the 1980s. "Atmosphere" tells of the amazing feats we are capable of in order to live and love beyond limits.

Joan Goodwin from a young age she has been fascinated by the stars. Clever and reserved, she is content with her life as a physics and astronomy lecturer at Rice University and as aunt to her beloved niece Frances. Until she comes across an advertisement in which NASA seeks women to join its space flight programme. Suddenly Joan feels an urge to become one of the handful of people who have flown into space.

Chosen from thousands of candidates in the summer of 1980, Joan begins training at the Johnson Space Center in Houston together with a group of exceptional candidates: the pilot Hank Redmond and the scientist John Griffin, who are good-natured and friendly even in the most tense situations; Lydia Deines, who has worked too hard to pretend to be pleasant; the kind-hearted Donna Fitzgerald, who keeps her own secrets, and Vanessa Ford, the magnetic and mysterious aviation engineering specialist who can fix any engine and fly any plane.

As the new astronauts become friends and prepare for their first flights, Joan discovers a passion and love she never could have imagined. In this new light she begins to question everything she thought she knew about her place in the universe.

And then, in December 1984, during mission STS-LR9, everything changes in an instant.

Tense, thrilling and emotional, the novel "Atmosphere" showcases the best of what Taylor Jenkins Reid is capable of: she takes readers to remarkable places at pivotal moments, has excellently crafted characters, and tells an exciting and inspiring story about the transformative power of love ‒ but this time among the stars.
