Jane Eyre (Ciela)

"Jane Eyre" is the most widely read and beloved book by Charlotte Brontë. Strongly influenced by the Romantic tradition, yet considered "revolutionary" for its time, "Jane Eyre" is much more than a love story – it is a book about dark moments overcome through strength of character, fighting spirit and unwavering faith.

Orphaned as a child, Jane Eyre grows up under the guardianship of her hard-hearted aunt and is subjected to the constant torment of her spoiled cousins, and is then sent to Lowood. In the cold boarding school, which seems to have come straight out of a Gothic novel, little Jane discovers new and ever new faces of cruelty, arrogance and heartlessness, hidden behind pious humility and showy philanthropy. But there she also meets her first friends, feels care, and begins to develop her natural gifts – intellect, sensitivity and resilience.

Very soon Jane grows up and decides to seek her fortune in the world. She is employed as a governess at the gloomy, remote estate Thornfield, where she is to look after little Adèle, while her guardian – the enigmatic Mr. Rochester – travels around the world. Life at the estate is a little lonely, but Jane is happy. The return of the dark, scowling Mr. Rochester however disrupts the peaceful routine.

Moreover, their passionate conversations, interspersed with humour and wit, awaken in the young woman feelings she has never experienced and must not experience toward a man who is older, richer and of higher standing than she is. Torn by emotions, Jane soon realises that secrets lie in Mr. Rochester's past, which no one suspects and which cast their dark shadows over Thornfield as well…
