Golden Hind is one of the most famous ships in English history – a galleon that became legendary for Sir Francis Drake's circumnavigation of the globe between 1577 and 1580. It was originally known as the "Pelican", but Drake renamed it midway through the voyage in 1578, as he prepared to enter the Strait of Magellan, calling it the "Golden Hind" to compliment his patron, Sir Christopher Hatton, whose coat of arms featured a golden hind (female deer). Hatton was one of the main sponsors of Drake's world voyage.

The Golden Hind remains in history as the first English ship to circle the world, and Drake as the first Englishman to make this voyage and survive it.
