In a small laboratory in San Diego, California, they were trying to create a series of rust-prevention products and degreasers for use in the aerospace industry. The team leader was chemist Norm Larsen, who, for NASA's needs, was looking for a solution that would "displace" water in order to protect the Atlas space rocket from rust and corrosion. 40 attempts were needed to obtain the world-famous formula. That is how the product got its name – WD-40 (water displacement 40th attempt).
